Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Community policing is an essential approach in modern policing, emphasizing cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the community to address crime and social issues. In Nigeria, where security challenges often lead to strained relationships between the police and the public, digital media has emerged as a crucial tool in bridging these gaps. In Wamakko Local Government Area, Sokoto State, digital media platforms, such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter, have been increasingly used to enhance communication between the police force and local communities. Through these platforms, information about crime prevention, security tips, and community concerns can be easily shared. This study aims to explore the role of digital media in strengthening community policing efforts in Wamakko, examining how these tools facilitate cooperation, enhance transparency, and contribute to the safety and well-being of the local population.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While digital media has great potential for enhancing community policing, there remains limited research on its specific impact in rural areas like Wamakko Local Government Area. The police force faces challenges in engaging with community members and ensuring effective communication, particularly in remote areas. Despite the availability of digital media, the extent to which it is being used for security purposes, and its actual effectiveness in enhancing community policing, remains unclear. This study seeks to fill this gap by assessing how digital media is currently being used, its challenges, and the ways in which it has influenced policing efforts in the community.
